'Reading ocean tide charts and planning the day around low tide was a new experience for our family.'
The first day, we caught the tail end just before dusk, and we were awe-struck as we teetered between the sea anemones and barnacles tucked between cracks as we clambered up and down the rocks.
Our sore legs from hiking hours prior made it more challenging, as we wanted to avoid stepping on any of the creatures that blended so well into their landscape. Our eyes needed some time to adjust, which came just as the sun was starting to set.
Someone yelled, A STARFISH!! That was all it took to get two teenagers equally excited for the early morning tide pool explorations to come.
Once our eyes gave way to finding something new, our view expanded, and creatures of all shapes and sizes started to reveal themselves. Observing hermit crabs in their natural habitat is one of my favorite memories from that trip. Fast and feisty, they were hilarious to watch.
