My Grandpa had a bird feeder that stood on a carpet of vines in front of an old window, between a tall pine and an old umbrella tree. This feeder was special. Although it was beautiful, it was made with a labor of love by my Grandpa on the other side, cemented into the ground by my Dad.
These very different men in my life shared a common interest: Birds. As a six-year-old, it was the BIGGEST deal, as it intertwined my worlds. It unintentionally showed me that despite differences, there's almost always a way to find common ground.
When I entered the room, my Grandpa would stop reading his newspaper, look up, and tell me to listen carefully to the Chickadees on that feeder. "If you listen closely, you can hear them say, CHEESE-BUR-GER." Giggles ensued, and you can never unhear it once heard.
Somehow, that cemented feelings of peace and joy in my childhood brain. Whenever I hear a chickadee, I am filled with joy and remember the love for birds my Dad and Grandpas shared.
This collection reminds me to slow down to enjoy the birds on my walks, relish their dance taking turns at my feeders, and notice their different personalities.
Chickadees are still a favorite - brave and curious; they yell at me when my feeders are low and are often the first to announce they're full to the neighborhood birds.
