About Us : storied goods for home + life

June & December was founded with an adventurous spirit and the belief that extraordinary design is more than an item: it is the feeling that is evoked when you discover your next great find.  We celebrate that idea by bringing unexpected contrasts together with our paper, textile and gift products in ways that will make your heart sing…
After all, we know a thing or two about opposites coming together. We're Katie and Nick Forte, founders of June & December, but also two very different halves of a perfect pair. Katie is an artist, graphic designer, aesthetically-motivated thinker and on-the-spot inventor of rainy day projects for her kids who loves to blend her rustic country upbringing with her eye for clean and elegant lines. Nick is a business-minded former event planner with an eye for detail, a passion for cooking and a dedication to reviving personal, old-fashioned customer service, where promises are kept and handshakes are a bond.
Figuratively speaking, Nick crosses the T's and dots the I's while Katie designs the typography.
Everything we do, from the designs we create to the materials we select and the American manufacturers we move forward with, is meticulously considered. We live (happily and oh-so-gleefully) in the details, with the creed that the littlest things make the biggest differences.
We relish not just great design, but great products: their texture, their weight, the feel of quality-made paper and fabrics. We only select items we would buy ourselves and always strive to find locally sourced materials made in the USA, seeking the perfect match for our designs to tell their story.
Pairing great designs with quality materials that are expertly assembled is what we love to do. June & December is our next big adventure and we're thrilled to welcome you to it.

»Why June + December

Why June + December

We began in 2010 as Paper, Ink & Earth, an Etsy store showcasing custom-made stationery and throw pillow cover designs that blended Katie’s signature graphic designs with whimsy, humor and the unexpected.  However, through a serendipitous combination of customer demand and our own desire to grow and offer more, our small store was ready for something bigger.

We knew it was time to follow suit. We chose June & December for all it symbolizes—two months that could not be more opposite, but are a part of a greater whole. They're the months our two children were born and the months in which Michigan is like two homes: frigid and quiet in the wintertime, golden and ebullient in the summer. Life is about finding balance between contrasts and celebrating the happy accidents in between. We think memorable design is a bit like that, too.

Meet Katie

Katie’s childhood was filled with skinned knees, mosquito bites, plaid uniform skirts, penny loafers and an extremely large family of opposites. It is those stark contrasts in which she derives much of her inspiration. Her work explores the harmony between rustic and refined through her hand-drawn, graphic illustrations and use of typography.

Her first endeavor as an entrepreneur was spending summers selling her Uncle’s sweet corn instead of lemonade. Prior to co-founding June & December, she worked as an art director creating TV & print ads for a large Detroit ad agency. Katie spends her free time collecting moments, vintage clocks and typography, experimenting with different mediums, snail hunting quests with her children and getting lost in a really good book.

Meet Nick

Nick grew up a self-proclaimed fort building aficionado, enjoying hunting and fishing expeditions as soon as he was old enough to get into trouble. An adventurer at heart he’s always on a quest searching for the perfect unexpected gift for loved ones, scouring hidden antique spots and the World Wide Web. Attending Michigan State University, Nick met his best half and was forever saved from the “torment” of living among white walls where his only pillow was for sleeping. In his free time he enjoys all things tech, cooking, Lego building, knee hockey, and toad chasing adventures with the kiddos.
